Edith Pargeter at her best. A wonderful story of Henry "Hotspur" Percy's rebellion in 1403. Pargeter writes so beautifully and with such detail you are transported into early fifteenth century England. The only negative I encountered was I found it hard to relate to a heroine called Justin.

I had no idea that there was so much violent history around the little town of Shrewsbury..Pargeter takes you back, puts you in the middle of the place and events, gives the people an actual existence, rather than just a name. You can experience the history rather then just read about it. Great.
Edith Pargeter is an often overlooked author who writes terrific historical fiction. You may know her as Ellis Peters who wrote the "Cadfael Chronicles". This is a stand-alone novel that is one of my favorites.
I really enjoyed this work. It is unlike other works of medieval historical fiction that I have read, in that this book does not have a lot of page-turning, stroke-by-stroke violence. Where this work excels the others is the skill with which the author reveals the minds of two leading characters, Henry "Hotspur" Percy and King Henry IV. These two characters are locked in a very intense Achilles vs. Agamemnon type of conflict, and the author brilliantly portrays the struggle in the mind of each, allowing you to clearly understand how such a conflict can escalate so quickly. This intense emotional portrayal allowed me to not only experience the dramatic events in the book, but to feel them. This book is not a thriller with lots of page-turning action, but for people with an interest in medieval history, this work of historical fiction offers an amazing and emotionally powerful window into a very fascinating period. I highly recommend it.
Pargeter's hero worship rankles, but the history is acceptable.
Immerse yourself in Pargeter and you may find yourself unable to function in the modern world. Caught in the emotional tides of grand loyalties and grand codes of honor, you may find present day imperatives to be pale by contrast. She is unequaled in her presentation of history.
This lean little work of historical fiction is a marvel of tight construction and careful crafting. Beautifully written, gripping and poignant, this spare little novel describes the clash between Henry IV "Bolingbroke" who wrested the throne from Richard II (whom he later is believed to have starved to death) in an uprising supported by Henry "Hotspur" Percy. These men came together in common cause to depose the calamitous Richard, but in this novel, which begins after Richard's overthrow, they have become enemies for reasons the author clearly explains. The third principal figure, Henry IV's son and heir, Hal (of later Agincourt fame), is torn between loyalty to his father and his hope of succeeding to the throne, and his boyhood love for his mentor, Hotspur. The interaction between these three men forms the foundation of the historical events on which the action is based.
The pace is fast moving and the language is carefully chosen. Beautiful English is in itself a pleasure to read, and Pargeter is a wonderful wordsmith. Furthermore, she succeeds in giving believable psychology to all players - not easily done 600 years after the fact. It is impossible to know for sure if these people were as the author describes them, but after reading this book, I am convinced of the trueness of her characterizations. There are no strict "villains" here, but rather shades and nuances of human behavior which allow the reader to draw his own conclusions.

I was very moved reading this novel. In my opinion, it represents the very best of what is possible in historical fiction. The facts are overall accurate (Hotspur was killed by an arrow through the eye, not the chest, for example) and the characters are not distant sterotypes, but seemingly real people whom the reader cares about due the the author's careful narration. As an aside, Pargeter is very kind to her female characters and Joan of Brittney, Elizabeth Mortimer and the fictional Julian are all very sympathetically depicted.

I heartily recommend this to any lover of true historical fiction a beautifully written and moving story about fascinating people living in a fascinating time of British history. Just excellent!
Like the majority of reviews here, I am very impressed with the quality of the novel. Sure, she embellished some of the tale, but brings a plausible rendition of characters who are not well known to the modern audience. I enjoyed the novel even if you have to blink at the parts that are definitely made up to move the story. The battle was real and was created very well.
