The Kindle version IS MISSING THE LAST CHAPTER.I've read and re-read this book several times in my life. Each time, it speaks to different parts of my soul. Julia is orphaned when Cromwell's forces invade her father's castle. She's adopted by a Dutch sea captain who finds her scrounging for food. Orphaned a second time, she survives a brutal orphanage to be reborn as a "Company's Daughter", to be married off to an unknown nutmeg planter in the Spice Islands. Suspense, mystery, and intrigue surround Julia's new family.
Like others of Lofts' books, there's more grit, truth, and reality than sweeping romance. Lofts creates great depth in her characters. As in real life, a person has strengths and weaknesses, --and all too often, the weaknesses take first place. In Scent of Cloves, characters, settings, and plot points are wound together deeply. Pain, betrayal, and unexpected tenderness crop up in strange places. When I finish reading, I've gone on a harrowing journey, and discovered something about the depths of a human heart. Given my love for Lofts' books, you can imagine my shock to find that THE KINDLE VERSION IS MISSING THE LAST CHAPTER.

Scent of Cloves edition by Norah Lofts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
An unusual and interesting story of Julie Ashley a young woman who undertakes a "glove marriage" and sails to the island of Rua to be the wife of a man she has never met. The strength of the novel lies in the detail and historical period of when the Dutch East Indian Company was at it's peak.
This is more a novel of suspense and mystery than of romance, although there is a romantic element to the story. It is an engrossing well written novel and kept my interest throughout but I would have liked a more detailed ending for some of the characters.
Good read; historically interesting.
Norah Lofts writes historical fiction not just romance. Not canned with the right vocabulary. The romance is a very smaill part more or lass not needed.
Good interesting and original story, but not super indepth on characters Story progresses quickly but also ends rather quickly. It left wrapped up too hastily and left me unsatisfied. Editing of book is not great, typos/wrong words, and the sentence formation at times is ackward to read and interpret, causing me to read some sentences twice.
One of my favorite books and I was so glad to be able to purchase a new copy as my old one was falling apart. I also love the new cover. It is perfect with just the right hint of mystery. However, the protagonist had gray/purple eyes which I have never seen in my life and I would like to see that reflected on the cover.
I read this book many years ago when I was a teenager. It was one of my favorite stories then and I wanted to re-read to see if I still liked it. I loved it! A beautiful story of an orphan child who is finally given a home only to have an arranged marriage to a very wealthy man from India. The surprise comes when she meets her father-in-law. Being the kind lady she was, she keeps the family secret until she makes a horrible discovery just yards from their beautiful home. I won't say any more, except don't be put off by the cover of the book...it has nothing to do with the story.
I can't read enough Nora Lofts. Having first had the pleasure of finding her fictionalized biographies of English queens Kathryn of Aragon and Anne Boylen, I have since read many others of her books not strictly set in medieval times and they are equally satisfying. Author Lofts has an amazing talent for characterization through detail; her fictional characters are absolutely real. It must be that she herself observed us humans closely to be able to depict small mannerisms in such telling detail. Lofts seems to know what it is to be an orphan, a narcissist, a love-struck youth, a scheming opportunist and a mentally-challenged recluse as all of them are met in this tale. The story is of a woman left on her own through the workings of fortune who finds herself on a distant island of nutmeg plantations which hides strange and terrible secrets. I leave the particulars to others, as what is divine about this book is the writing. Try it for yourself.
