As a parent of a former synchronized swimmer, I found the book very realistic and captivating. It was hard to stop reading - I think it will appeal to pre-teens, teens, and adults, whether or not you are involved in synchronized swimming! Well-developed characters and great editing!
Out of Synch is a terriffic sports-themed book for girls. The story is inspirational in more than encouraging the reader to participate in a sport, setting goals and realizing them even under adversity. It translates to the goals and determination of life. A very good read for anyone, really.
There is a serious lack of sports-themed books featuring a female protagonist, so if that's all this novel was, I think it would still have value. If you have a female athlete in your life, buy this book immediately. There is no doubt she will identify strongly with the story and recognize many of the main character's experiences in her own life.

However, even if you aren't raising an athlete, the themes of independence, teamwork, dedication, work ethic, family support and pride in oneself are universal, and they are explored here in an extremely entertaining and engaging way. It doesn't take a sports fanatic (or even a female) to appreciate this story. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it wholeheartedly!
I REALLY liked this book. I thought the main idea of the book was something that I haven’t thought about, which I found really cool. It never came to mind the struggle some people go through being synchronized swimmers, especially for boys like Winston. Synchronized swimming never seemed to have dangers, at least that’s what I thought, but now I know more and I can appreciate and admire people who do synchronized swimming. I really liked this book because it was very descriptive and got me attached to the main character, Katie. It showed what good yet very different coaches she had and what they went through in order to help Katie achieve her dream to be in the olympics, starting with the regional synchronized swimming meet. I love the many surprises the characters bring and the amazing turn of events -- I could go on, but then I would be retelling the story. XD Overall, the book was AMAZING!
This is the kind of story I wish I had read when I was ten, twelve, even fifteen. It is empowering - Katie is so easy to like, and I enjoyed getting to know her, rooting for her, and traveling with her as she made her dreams happen. Every young person who dreams big should read this book, even if you're not a swimmer. Her story is for everyone who has ever tried to accomplish a goal.
